Research in Sweden 2013 — 2016
In May of this year Minister for Education Jan Björklund invited a number of organizations to provide input and formulate proposals on strategies for the forthcoming research and innovation policy bill that will be submitted in 2012.
The Swedish Research Council will coordinate the government research financier´s (Vinnova, The Swedish Energy Agency, etc.) proposals for additional research strategies. Universities and colleges have also been invited to provide their views on how the role of researchers can be developed. The responses, which must be submitted to the government in November 2011, will show the strategies proposed by various players.

We have chosen to present Bil Sweden´s and IVA´s responses in summary. The responses have been released as public documents for people wishing to study the responses in more detail.

Bil Sweden considers it important that the forthcoming bill contain the following:
• Continued focus on challenge-driven research and innovation in the automotive and transportation fields.
• The development of research and innovation system processes.
• Targeted support to strong performance clusters in research, innovation and education.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences puts forward six main proposals:
• Promote initiatives within education, research and innovation, which are collectively society´s most important investments for the future.
• Increase efforts to meet the greatest societal challenges.
• Strengthen Sweden´s long-term innovative ability and its innovation culture.
• Devote increased resources to research, innovation and infrastructure — reward collaboration between academia and business.
• Create better conditions for innovative procurement by encouraging the early adoption of technology use in the public sector.
• Strengthen the internationalization of Swedish research and innovation policy.

The forthcoming bill is extremely important for Sweden´s future research strategy. Prioritized areas will probably be those that are able to reduce climate impact, streamline important social functions and strengthen Sweden´s leading edge competence. Many organizations have contributed with their views and the bill will be important and demand broad commitment. It affects our future.
